Remove or not to remove Laptop battery

Here is answer for your question to remove of not to remove laptop battery. Which one is the better thing to do to extend laptop battery life

Will removing laptop battery increase lifetime? Does running laptop with AC power plugged in will damage your battery? I am sure those questions have crossed on your mind.

The answer for both questions is YES. Here the reasons why removing battery will make the battery life’s longer.

How does your laptop battery work?

Common battery type in your laptop is Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion). In between, there is positive charge called cathode and negative charge as anode.

The cell is filled with an electrolyte in order for the Li ions to flow into the cell from cathode to anode, and this is exactly what happens when battery discharged.

When you charging by plugging your battery laptop into AC power, the ion is forced to move to the opposite direction. Here the ion filled the anode back and increasing its potential for later powering your laptop.

When Lithium-Ion Batteries lose its durability?

The ion theoretically can go back and forth forever, however in practical use it won’t happen. Your battery will lose the durability, because the more ion frequently flowing the more chance it will get trapped and unable to flow.

This is why every battery has its own lifetime and aging. The more ions trapped and unable to move, battery will lose its storing capability.

What Causes Batteries to Age and lose durability?

  1. Overcharge. although most laptop batteries has a charge threshold to prevent overcharging, constantly keeping full charge will stress your battery as result will decrease the durability and lifetime.
  2. High Temperature/Heat. Li-ion batteries will lose its capacity faster on higher temperature.
  3. Low Temperatures. Low temperature ain’t good for your battery material. It may damages your battery
  4. Prolonged Storage. Unfortunately even in unused state your battery will keep aging, since the the ion keep flowing every time.

Conclusion: Remove or not to remove

As stated above the answer is YES, remove laptop battery will extend its lifetime. It would be better to remove your battery when you plug your laptop into reliable voltage AC power.

This attempts is useful to prevent from overheating and overcharging. By doing this you will eliminate two main causes for battery aging.

Note: It is highly suggested to remove laptop battery after you unplug it from AC power to prevent electricity shock. Also keep in mind to turn off your laptop before removing.

Tips to extend your laptop battery life

  1. Never full discharge your battery, keep it at least minimum 20%. Full discharge means you are entering full cycle zone for your battery. Battery manufacturer usually write note for your battery cycle life time. If you full discharge and then full charge your battery, it means you have used 1 quota of your battery charging cycle.
  2. Don’t rely on hibernate mode and don’t ignore your system warning to charge battery. Relying on hibernate mode as habit ain’t good for your battery. Try to immediately plug the power source when needed.
  3. If possible, turn off your laptop when charging. Your battery won’t get ideal voltage when you power is not focused to charge and powering your laptop at the same time.
  4. If you have to leave your laptop for long period of time, keep your battery at least 50%. Prolonged inactivity state is best when your battery is around 50%.
  5. Buy additional fan for your laptop. As stated above heat is what you should avoid. buying 2$ fan will give you more than what you think.
  6. Clean your laptop from dust. More to avoid overheating, clean your laptop regularly and make sure the air flow is not obstructed.
  7. Keep your system and software update. Laptop manufacturers and program developers will keep updating their driver and software for the best use of battery consumption. They are working hard to enable software and your hardware use the minimum power source.
